Leone Hyde Ray Memorial Scholarship

The family of Leone Hyde Ray, in agreement with the Development Foundation of Western Carolina University, Inc., has established an endowed fund to provide support for a Robbinsville Senior who is an education major.

Leone Ray grew up in Graham County as the fourth of eight children. Because of the severe economic condition during the Great Depression, it seemed unlikely that Leone would be able to realize her dream of attending college. However with a firm determination to succeed, she set out for Western Carolina Teachers College where she paid her own way through school. She graduated in 1941. Leone taught elementary school for six years in Robbinsville and 34 years in Maryville , Tennessee .

Before her death in 1996, Leone indicated that she wanted her family to establish a scholarship fund at Western Carolina University .
