Leone Hyde Ray Memorial Scholarship
The family of Leone Hyde Ray, in agreement with the Development Foundation of Western Carolina University, Inc., has established an endowed fund to provide support for a Robbinsville Senior who is an education major.
Leone Ray grew up in
Graham
County
as the fourth of eight children. Because of the severe economic condition during the Great Depression, it seemed unlikely that Leone would be able to realize her dream of attending college. However with a firm determination to succeed, she set out for
Western
Carolina
Teachers College
where she paid her own way through school. She graduated in 1941. Leone taught elementary school for six years in Robbinsville and 34 years in
Maryville
,
Tennessee
.
Before her death in 1996, Leone indicated that she wanted her family to establish a scholarship fund at
Western
Carolina
University
.

and major in education.

Amount: $600.00 renewed annually
Payment of funds: A high school GPA of 3.0 is required and funds are paid upon the successful completion of the first semester with a 3.0 GPA.
